The University of North Carolina Asheville, UNC Asheville or UNCA for short, is a co-educational, four year, public liberal arts university, located in Asheville, which is the county seat of Buncombe County, situated in the US state of North Carolina, with a population estimated at a number of more than 78.500 inhabitants, during the 2008 census. It is part of the four-county Asheville Metropolitan Statistical Area, which has more than 400.000 people, living within its limits.
UNC Asheville was founded in 1927, as Buncombe County Junior College, adopting its current name in 1969, when it became part of the University of North Carolina System. It is the designated public liberal arts university within that system, and has been classified as a Liberal Arts I institution since 1992, the institution also being today, a member of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges.
The athletic teams from the University of North Carolina Asheville are known as the UNC Asheville Bulldogs, who compete in NCAA's Division I Big South Conference, in various sports, being perhaps best known for their achievements in basketball, in which they've experienced success many times, in the past years, including in '84, when they won the NAIA National Championship, in 2003, when they won the Big South Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time, and in 2008, when they set a new school record for victories (23) and won a share of the Big South Regular Season Championship, becoming the 1st team in the history of the Big South Conference to advance to the National Invitation Tournament (NIT).
